What is Sodium hyaluronate?
Sodium hyaluronate is a salt form of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is a linear polysaccharide, and the structure consists of repetitive disaccharide units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine bound by β(1→3) and β(1→4) glycosidic bonds. It can be obtained by extracting from cockscomb or through microorganism fermentation. Sodium hyaluronate is derived from hyaluronic acid, a high molecular weight biopolymer. When the acid is neutralized, it results in its salt form, sodium hyaluronate. It is highly soluble in water, forming a viscous and clear solution. Its molecular weight ranges from tens of thousands to multi-million, and its main physiological functions are moisture, lubrication, and osmoregulation.
